This disease of the gums is caused by the increase of certain types of bacteria adjacent to the gums which, in turn, initiate the body's defense mechanism. Insufficient dental hygiene is condusive to the increase of bacteria on plaque which adheres to the tooth's surface. Without this plaque neither gingivitis nor pardontitis is possible.

Caused by the effect of minerals in our saliva, hard tartar can develop out of soft plaque. This is also conducive to an increase in bacteria.

Just how quickly this disease progresses differs from individual to individual, depends on how aggressive the bacteria in question are and the reaction of the tissue to the infection. Smoking, diabetes, stress and malnourishment can accelerate the destruction.
